# Introduction

Touch GIS is a powerful field data collection tool for iPad and iPhone. This guide is intended to help you understand all the features and options available to users.

# Interface Overview

## Project Manager

This is where you will create, access, and manage your Touch GIS projects. You can also access your account details from this view.&#x20;

Once you've accessed a project you'll be able to collect and manage data. You'll also be able to access settings and options to assist you data collection. &#x20;

# Project Manager

Use the Project Manager to create, name, share, and delete projects. You can also access your account settings from this view.

## Creating a Project

There are two ways to create a project in Touch GIS. If you do not have existing data that you need to import, simply tap the orange '+' button in the upper right corner to create a project. If you do have existing data you need to import, tap the import button just to the left of the '+' button. After selecting the files to need to import, a new project will automatically be created with that data.&#x20;

## Share, Rename, Or Delete A Project

Access these options by tapping the three dots to the right of the projects name.&#x20;

## Account Details

To access your account details, tap the icon to the left of the import icon in the Project Manager.&#x20;

## Returning To The Project Manager

After accessing a project, you can return to the Project Manager at any time by tapping the icon in the upper left corner of your map.

# Map Tools

Touch GIS offers a variety of map tools to assist you in field data collection.

## Overview

Map tools are found in the lower right corner of the map view, next to the Add Feature button. The following tools are available: measure, base map switcher, and fit.&#x20;

## Measure Tool

The measure tool allows you to make quick distance or area measurments on the map. To measure something's distance from your current location simply tap once on the map. To measure the distance between two point simply place two fingers on the map at the desired points. To measure area simply place 3 or more fingers on my map. \
\
Tap the measure button again to exit measure mode.&#x20;

## Base Map Switcher

Use this feature to quickly toggle between base maps. You can also toggle Overlays (such as Contour Lines) on and off in this dialog.&#x20;

## Fit Project To Map

Tapping the fit button will zoom and center all points, lines, and polygons allowing you to see your entire project.&#x20;

# Placing Points

## Placing a Point Feature

Follow these steps to add a point type feature class to your project:

1. Begin by tapping the blue '+' button in bottom right corner of the map. Here you'll see all available feature classes.&#x20;
2. Select the point type feature class that you would like to place.&#x20;
3. Crosshairs will appear in the center of your map. Pan and zoom the map behind the crosshair to select the location where you would like to add your point.&#x20;
4. Tap Place Point

After placing your point on the map, you can add any necessary attributes via the Layers panel.&#x20;

**Tip:** If you would like to place a point at your location simply tap the Locate Me button in your GPS readout cell before or during steps 2 and 3.&#x20;

## Editing a Point Feature

Follow these steps to change the location of a point:

1. Select the point you want to reposition by tapping it on the map or navigating to it via the Layers panel.
2. Tap 'Edit' in the menu that appears at the bottom of the map.&#x20;
3. Pan and zoom on the map to position the crosshairs at the new desired position.
4. Tap 'Move' to confirm the point's new location.

## Deleting a Point Feature

You delete a point via the map or the Layers panel. To delete a point via the map, simply select the point and tap 'Delete' in the menu that appear at the bottom center of the map. To delete a point from the Layers panel navigate to the folder the point is housed in and a) swipe to delete the feature or b) tap Edit in the upper right corner of the Layers panel and then tap the red "-" button next to the feature.&#x20;


# Drawing Lines

## Drawing a Line Feature

Touch GIS offers 3 methods for drawing a line feature. Begin by tapping the blue '+' button in bottom right corner of the map. Here you'll see all available feature classes. Select the line type feature class you want to add to your project.&#x20;

Basic Draw is the default drawing mode in Touch GIS. Tap 'Mode' at the bottom center of the map to access the Free Draw or Record With GPS methods.&#x20;

**Basic Draw Method:**

1. Start by panning and zooming the map so your desired staring location is in the crosshairs.
2. Tap 'Add Point' to add the first point of your line.
3. Pan and zoom to position the next desired point in the crosshairs.
4. Tap 'Add Point' to add the second point in your line.&#x20;
5. Repeat this step until you've added all the points necessary to draw your line feature.&#x20;
6. Tap 'Save' to add your line to your layers and add attributes.&#x20;

**Tip:** You can undo and redo point placements in your line if needed using the buttons to the left and right of the 'Add Point' button.&#x20;

**Free Draw Method:**\
This method allows you to use your finger or a stylus (preferably an Apple pencil) to draw a line. This method is useful for quick data collection where accuracy is less important.&#x20;

**Record With GPS Method:**\
Make sure your device is located where you want to start recording before you begin.&#x20;

1. Tap 'Start Recording'&#x20;
2. Begin moving and proceed to the end of your line.
3. Tap 'Save' when you're done recording to add the line to your layers and add attributes.&#x20;

## Editing a Line Feature

To edit a line feature simply select it on the map and tap 'edit' at the bottom center of the map view. \
\
In edit mode, you can select which node you'd like to move. Simply select a node then pan and zoom the map to reposition it. You can use the arrow buttons to cycle through nodes on complex features. \
\
In addition to the main nodes there are also midpoints. These are displayed inbetween two nodes and appear smaller than the main nodes. Tapping a midpoint will create a new node that you can then place independently. Use this method to add more detail to your feature.&#x20;

# Drawing Polygons

## Drawing a Polygon Feature

Touch GIS offers 3 methods for drawing a polygon feature. Begin by tapping the blue '+' button in bottom right corner of the map. Here you'll see all available feature classes. Select the polygon type feature class you want to add to your project.&#x20;

Basic Draw is the default drawing mode in Touch GIS. Tap 'Mode' at the bottom center of the map to access the Free Draw or Record With GPS methods.&#x20;

**Basic Draw Method:**

1. Start by panning and zooming the map so your desired staring location is in the crosshairs.
2. Tap 'Add Point' to add the first point of your polygon.
3. Pan and zoom to position the next desired point in the crosshairs.
4. Tap 'Add Point' to add the second point in your polygon.&#x20;
5. Repeat this step until you've added all the points necessary to draw your polyong feature. Note: A polygon feature must 'close', so the first and last point draw will automatically connect to make a solid shape.&#x20;
6. Tap 'Save' to add the polygon feature to your layers and add attributes.&#x20;

Note: If you have imported a polygon with inner polygons (cut outs within a larger body) you will not be able to edit their geometry. You will be able to manage their attributes.&#x20;

## Deleting a Polygon Feature

You can delete a feature by selecting it and tapping 'Delete' at the bottom center of the map. You can also delete features from the Layers dialog.&#x20;


# Drawing Circles

## Drawing a Circle Feature

Begin by tapping the blue '+' button in bottom right corner of the map. Here you'll see all available feature classes. Select the circle type feature class you want to add to your project.&#x20;

#### Step 1 - Set Center

The first step in drawing a circle feature is setting the center point. Pan & zoom on the map to set the crosshairs and then tap 'Set Center'.

#### Step 2, Option 1 - Drag to Set Radius

After setting the center point you'll have the option to drag a handle to set your circles radius. Radius, Perimeter, and Area values are visible while doing this to help you get the correct size. You can pinch to zoom out on the map if you need more space to move the handle. When you're done setting the size of your circle tap 'Save' to add it to your layers.&#x20;

#### Step 2, Option 2 - Manually Enter Values

If you know the Radius, Perminter, or Area of the feature you're creating you can manually enter these values by tapping the text fields at the bottom of the screen. When you change one value, the others will automatically be updated.&#x20;

## Editing a Circle Feature

#### Moving a Circle Feature's Position

Select the feature you want to edit and tap 'Move' to move the center point of your circle. Pan and Zoom on the map to find your new desired center point and tap 'Move'.

#### Editing the Size of a Circle Feature

Select the feature you want to edit and tap 'Edit Size' to change the dimensions of your circle. You can drag to set the new size of your circle or manually enter values using.&#x20;

## Deleting a Circle Feature

You can delete a feature by selecting it and tapping 'Delete' at the bottom center of the map. You can also delete features from the Layers dialog.&#x20;


# Snapping to Feature Geometries

To create topologically consistent geometries, we have the Snap To Features option in our drawing mode settings.

While drawing new geometries, you can snap new points to existing features quickly and easily. This can be helpful when you need topological consistency, for example, when mapping habitats or connecting two lines that make a continuous feature.

Snapping is disabled by default, so the first step is to enable it. You can access the setting while drawing a new feature by tapping the Settings button on the drawing controls

In addition to the activation toggle, you can set the maximum snap distance in meters. The maximum snap distance controls the search radius for snap targets, so update this value according to the precision required by your project and the map scale that you’ll be working at.

With the setting enabled you can begin drawing your new geometry. As your cursor approaches an existing feature and crosses into the snap region, you’ll notice that your cursor changes, and a new icon is drawn on existing geometry. This icon shows you where the snap target on the existing feature is. It also shows you what type of point the snap target is, whether it’s an edge (plus sign), endpoint (triangle sign), or a non-endpoint vertex (circle). Tapping Add Point will place the point at this snap target.

With this feature, you can draw topologically consistent geometries right in the field in just a few seconds, reducing the amount of cleanup and simplification required back in the office.

You can also snap to features using Free Draw mode. The snap target icon will appear when you tap on the screen to confirm where the point was placed. When dragging your finger or a stylus, once you enter the snap target radius, the next point will automatically be placed on the existing geometry.

Finally, snapping is also available when editing geometries. So you can quickly add a new line or polygon with free draw mode without snapping, and then enable it later to make sure vertices are snapped to the right location.

# Layer Management

## Overview

Layers are how collected data is organized in Touch GIS. Think of layers as folders that hold groups of collected or imported point, line, or polygon features. Touch GIS offers many features for organizing and managing your data layers.

Access a project's layers by tapping the 'Layers' button in the lower left corner of the screen.&#x20;

## Layer Options

**Layer Visibility**\
Toggle layer visibility on/off by tapping the switch on the layers folder icon. Swithing visibility to off means all features and sublayers will not be displayed on the base map.&#x20;

**Edit Name**\
To edit a layer's name simply tap on a layer's name in the upper tool bar.

**Reorder Layers**\
To reorder layers, tap the 'Edit' button in the upper right corner of the layer panel. You'll see drag bars appear. Tap and drag on these bars to move layers up or down in the hierarchy.&#x20;

**Delete Layers**\
To delete layers, tap the 'Edit' button in the upper right corner of the layer panel. You'll see red delete buttons appear next to each layer. Tap the delete button on the layer you want to delete, then confirm your decision. &#x20;

**Add Layer**\
This feature allows you to create a new sublayer inside the current layer you're viewing.&#x20;

**Number of Features in Layer**\
This displays the number of features housed inside a sublayer.&#x20;

**Share Layers**\
To access sharing option for a layer (or entire project if you're viewing the master layer) simply tap Share in the options bar at the bottom of the layers panel.&#x20;

**Import Layers**\
To import data to your layers, simply tap Import button in the options bar at the bottom of the layers panel.&#x20;

**Move A Layer**\
Use this feature to move a layer inside or out of another layer.

**Layer Opacity**\
Set the opacity of a layer and all it's sublayers.&#x20;

**Lock Layer**\
This feature locks a layer, meaning it is visible on the base map but features in that layer are not selectable.&#x20;

# Importing Files

Easily import files from iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, or via email.

## Importing Files From The Project Manger

To create a new project from an imported file simply tap the import button in the upper left corner of the project manager. This will allow you to access your devices Files dialog and select the file you wish to import.&#x20;

## Importing Files Inside An Existing Project

To import a file into an existing project simply tap 'import' in the toolbar at the bottom of your Layers panel. This will allow you to access your devices Files dialog and select the file you wish to import.&#x20;

# Sharing Files

## Sharing Files From The Project Manger

You can share an entire project via the Project Manager by tapping the three dots next to the project's title and selecting 'Share'. A dialog will appear displaying a list of available files types. After selecting a file type you will see a system share dialog.&#x20;

## Sharing Files From The Layers Panel

You can share your entire project or specific layer via the Layers Panel inside a project. To share your entire project, navigate to the top layer and tap 'Share' at the bottom of the Layer Panel. To share a specifc layer or feature, simply navigate to that layer or feature and tap 'Share' at the bottom of the screen. A dialog will appear displaying a list of available files types. After selecting a file type you will see a system share dialog.&#x20;

# Saving Files to the Cloud

You can back up projects and features to cloud storage with popular providers like iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, and more. Here's how.

You can save projects and feature exports to many popular cloud storage providers in a few simple steps that we'll walk through below:

1. For cloud storage providers other than iCloud, download the app to your device. Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, and Box all have mobile apps for iOS.
2. Add the provider as an available Location in the sidebar of the Files app.
3. Export your project or folder with the "Save to Files" option and select your cloud storage location.

### Downloading the right app

For the first step, if you're using iCloud on an iOS device then there's no need to download anything, this is supported natively on your device. For other providers, you need to download their mobile app, which will enable the Files app on your device to make it an option when saving files. Here are links to some of the main provider's apps:

### Adding your cloud storage provider to the Files app

Once you've downloaded the correct app, the next step is to make sure that the Files app knows to show you that provider as an option when saving a new file.

Open the Files app on your device. If you're on iPad, tap the three dots on the left sidebar, and then tap "Edit Sidebar":

If you're on an iPhone, first navigate to the Browse tab, and if you're looking inside a folder, tap the back arrow until you get to the top-level browse screen and then tap the tree dots in the top right corner, and then "Edit":

After tapping Edit, you should see your cloud provider listed under "Locations" with the toggle either on or off. If the toggle is already on, there's nothing else to do. If it's off, toggle it on.

### Export your file or folder and save it to the cloud drive

Once your cloud storage provider has been enabled in the Files app, all that's left to do is export your project or folder and save it in the right location.

Once you've selected your export type and you're presented with the "Share Options" screen, select "Save to Files":

Then, in the File Browser window, navigate to the top level view that shows available locations, select your cloud storage provider, and select your save location:

That's all there is to it!

### Restoring your backup or importing a shared file

# Viewing GeoPackage images in QGIS

Our GeoPackage exports use the Related Tables extension of the GeoPackage spec to store photo attachments. Learn how to view them in QGIS.

The GeoPackage Related Tables extension establishes a relationship between three different tables:

* A Feature table, with features that you want to store extra data on
* A Related table, which includes photos or other kinds of data related to features in the table above
* A Mapping table, which points to individual items in the Feature table and the Related table to tell the software that the two items are connected.

For example, say we have a GeoPackage with one point feature class (Observations) that stores photos of noteworthy field conditions. When exporting from Touch GIS the GeoPackage will have three tables for this feature class and its images:

* Observation (the Feature table)
* Observation\_images (the Related table with all of your photo data)
* Obervation\_Observation\_images\_map (the Mapping table)

Here's a test GeoPackage file if you would like to follow the examples below exactly:

### Viewing related images in QGIS

If you have QGIS version 3.44 or higher, QGIS will automatically detect the relationships between the Feature table, the Related table, and the Mapping table. You can confirm whether this is the case after loading your GeoPackage export into a QGIS project by opening the Project menu, selecting Properties, and then opening the Relations section. You should see something like the following, keeping our example GeoPackage from above.

It shows that the Mapping table has a relationship to both the Observation and Observation\_images layers. If you're running an older version of QGIS and these relationships weren't automatically loaded, you can create them yourself with the "Add Relation" button. One relation runs from the Mapping table's base\_id field to the Feature table's primary key (Touch GIS uses "gpkg\_id" for this field, but other apps may use something else), and the other relation runs from the Mapping table's related\_id field to the Related table's primary key ("id", most likely).

Once you have the project's relationships established, you'll be able to see related records when you open the Attributes table for a feature layer.&#x20;

In the above screenshot, the bottom panel labeled "Observation\_images\_media\_forward" was automatically added, because the Observation feature has relations, in fact it has 3 related images.&#x20;

We need to make two more adjustments to see the images rendered directly in the Attributes table for each Feature.

For the first, we need to tell QGIS that the Related table has image data, and how to display it. Right click on the Related images table (Observation\_images, in this example) and open the Properties panel, then go to the attributes form.

At the top, change the "Autogenerate" form to "Drag and Drop Designer". Then add an HTML Widget by dragging it from the "Available Widgets" column to the "Form Layout" column.

GeoPackages store images in their binary object form, so the following code tells QGIS how to process that data into an image. Paste this into the "Configure HTML Widget" window that opens:

This will render the photo in its full size, but if you would like to adjust it, change the width and height properties above from "auto" to some number. To retain aspect ratios but make the default images smaller or larger, keep one of them as "auto" and adjust the other by inserting a number like 300. Note that "data" is the name of the column in the Related Images table which contains the raw photo data.

Aside: You can also accomplish this with the QML widget, if you're more comfortable with that syntax. In that case, here is the corresponding code:

With either of those done successfully, you should see the image preview in the widget configuration screen like so:

And if you open the Attributes table for the Related Images table, you'll see the images inline like so:

The second adjustment we need to make to get these images to show in the Feature Attributes table is to tell QGIS to display the Related table record instead of the Mapping table record in the Attributes form.

Right click on the Feature layer (Observation in this example), choose Properties, and again navigate to the Attributes Form tab. Change the type from "Autogenerate" to "Drag and Drop Designer" and drag the Relations widget from the Available Widgets column to the Form Layout column. Then in the Widget Display section, change the Cardinality dropdown from "Many to one relation" to the other option which will be the Related images table, in this case "Observation\_images (id)". You can also give the field a label like "Related Images" to make it clear. Here's what it should look like in the end:

Click "OK", and with that final adjustment we should now see related images directly in the Feature Attribute form:

### Viewing related images in ArcGIS Pro

At time of writing (April 2026) ArcGIS Pro does not directly support the GeoPackage Related Tables extension, neither does it allow us to directly view images from the blob data that the GeoPackage saves images in. When you load the GeoPackage file into a project, it will omit the mapping tables, but it should include the Related image tables. Exports from Touch GIS seed some extra data in the Related images table so that you can still manually relate the image records to features if desired. For example, the feature\_id column maps to the gpkg\_id column in the feature table.

To work around these limitations and enable you to view your images directly in ArcGIS Pro we've developed [a public script and toolbox](https://github.com/mjroncone/arcgis-script-tools). This script takes your GeoPackage and creates a File Geodatabase from it. While doing this, it also reads the GeoPackage mapping tables to find all of the related images and uses ArcGIS' own tools to attach the images to the correct features inside of the Geodatabase. Once that's complete, you can select individual or groups of features and view them the Feature Pop-up or the Attributes Pane for selected features by looking for the tab labeled "Attachments".

To take advantage of this, here are the steps:

1. Download the [gpkg-related-tables-tools.atbx](https://github.com/mjroncone/arcgis-script-tools/blob/main/gpkg-related-tables-tools.atbx) file.
   1. Alternatively, if you're comfortable at the command line and prefer to have more control that way, clone the whole repository or download the attach-gpkg-related-media.py script. The README has instructions for interacting with the script and passing it the arguments that are needed. The end result is the same.
2. Open or create a new project in ArcGIS Pro, and add the toolbox to it along with the GeoPackage file with related images that you would like to view.
3. Open the toolbox and Double-click the "GeoPackage Related Media Helper" script. This will ask for three inputs:
   1. The GeoPackage file. This file won't be altered in any way. The script only reads from it and copies the data into a File Geodatabase.
   2. A File Geodatabase where you want to copy the GeoPackage data into, or alternatively a folder where the script can create a new Geodatabase. If you choose a folder, the new Geodatabase will have the same name as the GeoPackage, but with the `.gdb` extension.
   3. A folder where it's safe for the script to temporarily store image files. In order to attach them to the Geodatabase using ArcGIS' `arcpy` toolset, the images need to be copied from the GeoPackage and saved to a folder. Then those separate image files can be attached to the Geodatabase, after which they can be deleted.
4. After selecting your inputs, run the script. Assuming it completes successfully, you can now add the Feature layers from the Geodatabase to your project.
5. View the images either by:
   1. Using the Explore tool to click on individual features and scroll through the attachments carousel in the Pop-up.
   2. Using the Attributes Pane and selecting features either with the Select Tool or in the Attributes Table for a layer. With a feature selected you should see an "Attachments" tab next to "Attributes" and "Geometry" which lists out the attached images. Double clicking on any image will open it for viewing.

# Feature Class Datasets

## **Feature Classes**

Feature classes are a way of defining features (points, lines, polygons) that share attribute fields and a style. Feature classes help you standardize your data collection. The attribute fields included in a feature class are sometimes referred to as *forms*. Feature classes are housed inside of Feature Class Datasets.

# Creating New Feature Classes

## **Getting Started**

Feature classes are housed inside feature class datesets. Think of feature class datasets as folders that house related feature classes. Before creating a new point, line, or polygon feature class, you'll need to navigate to the dateset you want it housed in *or* create a new dataset.&#x20;

## **Creating A New Feature Class**

Once inside a feature class dateset you'll see the options for creating new point, line, polygon, or circle classes. After selecting one of these options, you'll be prompted to give your feature class a name.&#x20;

# Styling A Feature Class

## Overview

Feature Classes have a specified style. For point classes you can specify icon and color. For lines and polygons you can specify line thickness, line style, color, and alpha.&#x20;

Styles help you quickly identify feature class types on the map, in layers, and selection menus. Individual features can override the feature class style with their own arbitrary settings.&#x20;


# Attribute Fields

## Attribute Types

Attribute fields can be added to point, line, and polygon feature classes. The following attribute fields are available when creating/editing a feature class:

**Description**\
Allows you to input standard text.

**Date & Time** \
Presents a picker view for entering and editing the date and time. This attribute is automatically set to the current date and time when a feature is added to the map, but can easily be edited.&#x20;

**Photos**\
Allows you to attach multiple photos with the built-in camera or from the camera roll. You can also use the Markup tool to draw annotations on your photos.&#x20;

**Number**\
Allows you to enter a decimal or floating point number. *Tip: it is helpful to put the units in the attribute name.*

**List of Values**\
Present a selection of values, for example {True,False} or {Sand,Gravel,Dirt}. You can enable multi select if it's necessary to select more than one value during data collection. Note: when creating a new 'list of values' attribute you can copy a list from an existing feature class or import the options from a text, CSV, or JSON file.&#x20;

**Address**\
Allows you to enter a standardized street address. *Note: if you need to enter an address in a non-standard format it may be better to use the Description attribute type.*&#x20;

**Website** \
Allows you to enter a web URL. When a URL is present you can access it by tapping on it.&#x20;

**Telephone**\
Allows you to enter a standard phone number. When a number is present you can tap it to be presented with the option to call that number.

**Checkbox**\
A checkbox can be toggled on and off.

**Auto-Incrementing ID**\
Automatically assigns incremental IDs as features are added to the map. IDs increment globally, accross all projects to avoid reusing the same ID. You can manage the format of Auto-Incrementing IDs in the Settings App.&#x20;

**Barcode**\
Allows you to utilize a camera-based barcode scanner to populate a field with barcode data. *Feature available as of version 1.0.7.*

**Rotation**\
Define an angle of rotation for a feature. *Note: for point features you can choose to display the 'pin' icon at the entered angle.*&#x20;

# Importing List of Values options from text, CSV, or JSON files

This article walks through the process for creating a text, CSV, or JSON file in an acceptable format and importing it into the app to populate a list-of-values attribute's options.

Our List-of-Values attribute helps ensure that collecting data in the field is easy, quick, and valid. In cases where the list of valid values is large, you can import the list of options from a plain text file, a CSV file, or a JSON file. Let's walk through this process step-by-step.

The first step is choosing the file type that’s easiest for you and ensuring it meets the expected format so that the app can read the values correctly.

The simplest option is a .txt file. In this case, the app expects a comma separated list of values. For example, a .txt file with this content:

Option1,The second option,A. Third. Option.,123
```

Will produce an attribute with the following selections:

1. Option1
2. The second option
3. A. Third. Option.
4. 123

We also support .csv files, in which case the app will look for a column with the header value of “name” or “label” and read the values in that column. If no column has a matching header value, the app will read all of the values in the first column. Null, nil, or empty rows are ignored.

For example, a CSV file with the following contents:

Lastly, you can also import .json files. For JSON, you can either provide a flat array of values like `[”Option 1”, “The second option”, "A. Third. Option.", 123]`, or you can provide an array of objects.

When providing an array of objects, each object must contain the all of the same properties with the same data type, and one of the properties must have the key of “name” or “label”. The app will read this property to create the list options. Null or Empty values are ignored.

For example, a .json file with these contents:

    "name": "Option 1",

    "id": 2,

Now that we have a valid file to import, let’s see how to apply it to a feature class.

Find or create the feature class that needs the attribute and find or create the list of values attribute which will utilize the new options. In this case, we’re editing a Point feature class named “Nest” with a List of Values attribute named “Bird Species”. I’m going to import a CSV of bird species from the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) with 636 different species (download the file below to try for yourself).

First I tap the “Import from File” Button:

Then I select the file from the popup:

And that’s it! As we see below, all of the species have been imported from the “label” column of the CSV.

Now that we’ve added all the possible bird species as options for our attribute, we can be certain that the data collected in the field will match what we expect without any additional processing. For those of you in the field, a list with 600 options might sound like a real pain to scroll through, but thankfully our attribute select interface has a search box so you can find the option you need in just a couple of taps:

Tap on the search box and begin typing and the options will filter out in real time with every additional character.

The List-of-Values attribute is an easy, quick, and convenient way to reduce post-processing data correction work without making your field team's job more difficult.


# Sharing Feature Classes

Learn how to share feature classes and feature class datasets from one device to another on Touch GIS.

It can be helpful to use the same feature class definitions on each device when working on a project with multiple people on different devices. This helps to ensure that everybody is using the same collection form on all of the different feature classes, and makes aggregation of the data at a later time easier. See the video below for a demonstration of how to share feature classes from one iPad to another on Touch GIS.

For the sender:

* Open the project where the feature classes are defined
* Open the Options menu
* Open the Feature Classes item
* Open the Feature Class Dataset with the feature classes that you want to share
* Scroll down and tap "Export Dataset"
* Send the generated file to everyone that needs it

For the receiver:

* Open the project where you'll utilize the new feature classes
* Open the Options menu
* Open the Feature Classes item
* Scroll down and tap "Import Dataset"
* Select the file that you received from the sender.
* Start collecting data with your new feature classes!

# Attitude measurement

This page reviews how to use the Attitude Measurement Tool and attribute data type for feature classes. Attitude (a.k.a orientation) information can be key to contextualizing structures in the field.

When mapping the location of structures in the field, it can be helpful to also document their orientation (a.k.a attitude) in three dimensions. Tracking this information can help contextualize features in their surrounding landscapes or track drift and tilt of structures over time.

While not required, we recommend using the Attitude attribute type whenever collecting data with the Attitude Tool. Paired together, these tools offer a highly reliable, quick, and easy way to both measure and record orientation data in your data collection forms.

### Adding Attitude Attributes

When [creating a new feature class](/feature-class-manager/creating-new-feature-classes), you can select "Add Attribute" and choose the "Attitude" type from the list:

After selecting the attitude type, you have a few options for formatting your attitude. If the feature class you're adding is meant for planar features, you'll want to choose either Strike and Dip or Dip and Dip Direction. If the feature class you're creating is for collecting linear feature data, you'll want to select Trend and Plunge.

It can also be helpful to set the Label and Rotation configurations for your feature class to the Attitude attribute you just selected.

When using an attitude attribute for a label, the value will be equal to the inclination component, meaning either Dip or Plunge. When using an attitude for rotations, the value will equal the directional component of the attribute (strike, dip direction, or trend) and rotate the feature's icon between 0-359 degrees to align with the compass heading.

### The Attitude Measurement Interface

To access the attitude measurement tool, tap on the icon in the bottom right corner of the screen that looks like a circle with a T-shape (the strike-dip symbol) inside. If you don't see this icon, then the attitude tool is currently disabled. To enable it, open the Options panel, and look at the Map Settings, then find the toggle switch for "Display Attitude Tool".

Tapping on the icon will open the attitude measurement screen, and if this is your first time it will be in the Planar configuration. Let's discuss each part of the interface from top-to-bottom:

#### Settings Button

This will open another window with additional configurations for the attitude tool. At the moment, there's just one configuration that allows you to toggle between the Strike and Dip format and the Dip and Dip Direction format. Keep in mind that using the Create Button with your measurement will convert the measurement to whatever format is configured with the selected Feature Class, regardless of what format the attitude tool is using. This conversion is done using the Right Hand Rule, meaning that strike will always be measured according to whichever direction would make the dip direction 90 degrees clockwise from the strike.

#### Measurement Type Toggle

Allows you to switch between the planar and linear measurement interface. The Linear interface is discussed later in this article.

#### Dial Indicator / Stereonet

This presents a visual representation of the attitude measurement. In the Planar configuration, the dial shows a variation of a stereonet. The strike-dip indicator rotates based on the orientation of the device, so it always shows the direction of the dip being measured as well as the horizontal plane. The curved line across the surface represents the magnitude of the dip. In the Linear configuration the dial represents a traditional clinometer or angle gauge, and an example is shown later in this article. Tapping on the dial indicator will lock in the current measurement.

Here's an example of the clinometer dial when using the linear measurement configuration:

#### Device Heading and Magnetic Declination Indicator

This dial shows you the current device heading as the Operating System sees it, as well as the magnetic declination according to the Operating System. This indicator is meant to provide a quick way to verify that your device's compass is calibrated correctly based on your current location and heading before taking a measurement.

#### Lock Indicator

When the center of this button is blue and the dial hand is red, as in the example above, the measurement is unlocked and is constantly updated. When the center of the button is white, with the outer ring blue, and the dial hand blue, the measurement is locked in and won't change until it is unlocked.

#### Value Readouts

These two boxes show the values of the current measurement in plain text, to make reading the instrument as easy as possible.

#### Feature Class Selector

This box will show the currently selected feature class, if there is one.  The selected Feature Class is the one that will be created when tapping the Create ("Add Point") button. Tapping on the box will allow you to navigate through your Feature Class Datasets to pick a Feature Class that has an attitude attribute.&#x20;

#### Create Button

This button will create a new instance of the selected feature class placed at your current location and automatically fill the feature's attitude attribute with the current measurement.

### How to take a planar measurement

After you've opened the attitude measurement tool and verified that your compass is calibrated, recording a new measurement is easy. The goal is to align the plane of the device with the plane that you want to measure, so they're parallel.&#x20;

This can be as simple as laying or holding the device on the surface to be measured and then tapping to lock the measurement in. In situations where this isn't possible, like when measuring a particular rock layer sandwiched within an outcropping, you can also hold the device up and align it visually to the plane, making a best-guess approximation of its form, and tapping the dial to lock it in once you're satisfied with the alignment.

Here's a visual representation of how the measurement is read:

### How to take a linear measurement

Linear measurements work similarly to planar ones, except that instead of aligning the plane of the device to the feature being measured, we need to align the long axis of the device to the feature. You can accomplish this by placing the long edge directly on top of the feature being measured, or by holding the device flat on the surface and aligning the edge to the feature.&#x20;

Since the orientation of the axis will be the same either way, you'll get the correct measurement. It also doesn't matter which of the two sides on the long axis you use to measure, as the trend and plunge of the two sides are always equal, so use whichever is more convenient for you.

Here's a visual representation of how the measurement will be read:

After taking your measurement and adding a point with it, you should see your new feature rendered on the map, labeled and rotated as applicable:

### How do I update an existing feature with a new measurement?

There are two ways to update an existing feature's attitude attribute, both easily accessible from the Feature Attributes Panel.

1. You can tap directly on the values of the attitude attribute to open a window that allows you to type in the values directly. This is particularly helpful if you want to fall back to a manual compass and clinometer.

2. You can tap on the strike-dip symbol next to the attitude attribute's values to open the attitude measurement view in Update mode, where the save button updates the original feature instead of creating a new one.

### What happens when I export an Attitude attribute?

Exporting and importing attitude attributes in the .tgis file format works seamlessly, the data will be restored exactly how it was before the export. For external file formats like KML, Shapefiles, or GeoJSON, the attitude attribute is split into two separate number fields, and the field names will depend on the attitude format. In general, they'll follow the format {attribute\_name}\_{component\_name} like so:&#x20;

* "Attitude\_Strike" and "Attitude\_Dip"
* "Attitude\_Dip\_Direction" and "Attitude\_Dip"
* "Attitude\_Trend" and "Attitude\_Plunge"

For shapefiles where field names are limited to 10 characters, the names are abbreviated like so:&#x20;

* "STR\_Attude" and "DIP\_Attude"
* "DIR\_Attude" and "DIP\_Attude"
* "TRND\_Attde" and "PLNG\_Attde"


# Offline Maps

Cache map tiles for offline data collection. Use the Offline Maps manager to create and manage cache regions.

## Creating Cache Regions

**Getting Started**\
Creating cache regions is done from the Options & Settings panel. Once you've navigated to the Offline Maps manager you'll see an option to create a 'New Cache Region'. After selecting this option you'll be prompted to give your new cache region a name. &#x20;

**Tip:** Giving your cache region a descriptive name will be useful when managing regions later.&#x20;

**Select a Map Type**\
After naming your new region you'll need to select which map type you'd like to cache. You can currently only select one map type per region.

**Resolution**\
This dialog allows you to set the resolution for your cache region. You can select the Basic, High, or Very High presets, or manually select the zoom levels you want to cache. We recommend the Basic setting for larger regions, as you may exceed the cache limit easily when caching large regions with High or Very High resolution.

**Defining Your Cache Region**\
Use the drag bars at top, bottom, left, and right of the region bounding box to resize your cache region. You can also zoom and pan to the specific area you need to cache. Estimated tile usage is displayed at the bottom of the bounding box. &#x20;

**Cache Tiles**\
After defining a new region's details and area, tap Cache to download the map tiles in that region. You'll see a progress indicator with tile count and file size count for the region.

## Managing Cache Regions

**Overview**\
You may need to delete or purge cache regions to free up space on your device. We recommend not purging tiles unless necessary, as redownloading tiles will count against your monthly MapBox tile limit.  \
\
**Purging A Cache Region**\
Purging a cache region deletes the downloaded tiles for that region. It does not delete the region's details, such as map type and resolution settings. You can redownload the tiles for a region at any time, assuming you are connected to Wifi or Cellular data.&#x20;

**Deleting a Cache Region**\
Deleting a cache region removes the regions details (map type and resolution settings) as well as any currently downloaded tiles. This is a permanent action and cannot be undone once you confirm your wish to delete a region.&#x20;

## Sharing Cache Regions

You can share cache regions with other Touch GIS users. This is useful if you have multiple people collecting data in the same offline area.&#x20;

**Note:** Shared cache regions do not include map tiles. A region simply defines the area to be cached. You will need to download the tiles in a region after importing it into Touch GIS.

# Raster Imagery

Touch GIS allows you to import georeferenced imagery. You can also import non-georeferenced imagery and manually place it on the map. Raster imagery can be managed in the Layer's panel.

## Importing Georeferenced Images / Rasters

#### Supported Formats

Touch GIS supports importing the following image formats:

* World File
* Geotiff
* KMZ
* Geospatial PDF

These formats will be tiled and overlaid on their corresponding areas on the map automatically.

## Manually Placing Raster Images

Touch GIS allows you to place non-georeferenced rasters on your map by selecting a series of correlated visual reference points.  Here's how:

1. At the bottom of the Layers panel select 'Import'
2. Choose the file you want to place (typically a TIFF, PNG, or JPEG)
3. After importing, you'll be prompted to select your first reference point. Pan and zoom to select a visual point that you will be able to correlate with a feature on the basemap. Select Next.
4. Next you will select the corresponding reference on your basemap. Pan and zoom to find this spot.&#x20;
5. You will need to repeat this process two more times for a total of 3 reference points to place your raster image.&#x20;

After all 3 points have been set you can edit their position if necessary from the Layers panel.

# Map Settings

Map Settings are accessed via the Options Panel, located next to the layers panel in the lower left corner of your map.

## General Options

**Display Point Names**\
This setting allows you to toggle on and off the visibility of point names on the map.&#x20;

**Allow Map Tilt**\
This setting allows you to toggle on and off the ability to tilt your map using a two finger swipe gesture.&#x20;

**Allow Map Rotation**\
This setting allows you to toggle on and off the ability for the map to tilt while zooming and panning. Switching this option off will keep your map north oriented.   &#x20;

## Base Map Types

**Mapbox Base Maps**\
Select a Mapbox Base Map to turn specific map layers on and off. These layers are part of the base map, and are not included in your exported data. For convenience, you can tap 'Reset' in the upper right corner to return all layers back to their default on/off state.\
\
All Mapbox Base Maps are available for offline caching.

**Other Base Map Types**\
Select a non-MapBox map type to view it's options. You can modify the display name of the base map, update it's tile URL, add additional tile URLs, enable caching, or remove the map type.&#x20;

**New Map Type from URL**\
If you have a tile URL you can add it to Touch GIS as a base map. URLs must be in the following format: http(s)://yourtiles.com/{z}/{x}/{y}

## WMS & WMTS Base Maps

If you have a WMS or WMTS URL you can add it to Touch GIS as a base map. WMS and WMTS sources can also be used as overlays (displayed on top of a base map) as detailed below. \
\
Touch GIS currently only supports raster imagery from WMS and WMTS sources. While some sources may contain map features with attribute data, you will not be able to interact with this data in Touch GIS.

**Note:** Touch GIS only supports the *EPSG:3857* projection. You may need to manually select this in the source's options in Map Settings.

## Overlays

**Contour Lines**\
This settings dialog allows you to manage the color and Line thickness of contour lines. Contour lines are an optional map overlay that can be viewed on any base map type. &#x20;

#### WMS & WMTS as overlays

If you have added WMS or WMTS services you can use them as overlays. This means they will appear on top of the current base map. To turn a WMS or WMTS on as an overlay, tap the eye icon next to the source in the Overlays section of the map switcher.&#x20;

# Project Units

Project Unit Settings are accessed via the Options Panel, located next to the layers panel in the lower left corner of your map.

## Linear Distance

Choose which unit type you would like linear distance to be displayed in. The following unit types are available:&#x20;

* Meters/Kilometers
* Feet/Miles
* Yards
* Nautical Miles

## Area

Choose which unit type you would like area to be displayed in. The following unit types are available:&#x20;

* Acres
* Square Meters/Kilometers
* Hectares
* Square Feet/Miles

## Coordinate Systems

Choose which system you would like coordinates to be dispalyed in. The following systems are available:&#x20;

* Latitude/Longitude
* UTM
* MGRS
* USNG

## Coordinate System Format

Some supported coordinate system have additional format display options. These options are:&#x20;

**Latitude/Longitude**&#x20;

* 0.00000°
* 0°00.000'
* 0°00'00.00

**MGRS & USNG**

* 1 m
* 10 m
* 100 m
* 1000 m


# GPS Settings

GPS Settings are accessed via the Options Panel, located next to the layers panel in the lower left corner of your map.

## Distance Filter

Filter GPS points by distance where this is the minimum distance travelled before aquiring a new point. This feature helps to filter out GPS 'spikes'. You can filter by the following distances:

* None
* 5m
* 10m
* 20m

## Time Filter

Filter GPS points by time where points are aquired at a specific rate. You can filter by the following rates:

* None
* 1s
* 2s
* 5s
* 10s

## Accuracy Filter

Filter GPS Points by accuracy where theis is the minimum accuracy at which we will accept new points. You can filter by the following accuracies:

* 5m
* 10m
* 30m
* 100m
* 200m

## Ultra Accuracy

This setting uses the highest possible accuracy and combines it with additional sensor data. Your device will attempt to acquire precise position information at all times and is intended to be used only while the device is plugged in, as this feature uses significant power resources.&#x20;

## Transferring Projects

The latest versions of GIS Kit & GIS Pro have a **KMZ 2.0** export option. This is the file format we recommend using when exporting projects that you intend to [import](/import-export/importing-files) into Touch GIS.

## Transferring Feature Class Datasets

GIS Kit and GIS Pro allow you to export Feature Class Datasets as **.FCL** files. We have added support for this file format in Touch GIS. [Importing](/import-export/importing-files) a .FCL will automatically add that Feature Class Dataset to Touch GIS. Imported Feature Class Datasets can be [edited](/feature-class-manager/creating-new-feature-classes) after import if necessary.&#x20;

The team member Enablement setting is designed to help you get the most value out of your subscription and save you time when managing large teams.

Enabled members have access to your subscription's premium features in-app and occupy a seat on your subscription. Non-enabled members do not have access to the premium features in-app and they do not occupy a seat on your subscription.

This is most useful when you have an internal IT team that needs to manage the account but won't be going out into the field and using the app to collect data. It's also useful when you have multiple field teams that are active at different times of the year. With the enablement setting, you can set up all of your team members at one time and simply update their enablement status when they're getting ready to do their fieldwork.
